Calocybe cf. ionides. First found in 2006 and posted to Indiana Mushrooms as Rugosomyces ionides. Unfortunately, the collection was lost, so, no voucher (a dried, preserved specimen). Then 15 years later, in 2021, I found one small specimen (featured above). The DNA sequence shows that this North American “version” of Calocybe ionides is not the same as the collections described from Europe. It actually matches closer to a species of Calocybe from China, Calocybe convexa, but not exactly. This is probably an undescribed species. It has been assigned the temporary code Calocybe sp. ‘ionides-IN01’.
Got lucky again in 2022 and found several specimens. Same immediate area as all my collections. Somewhat of a disturbed area right off a trail. Seemingly saprobic, growing from leaf litter and/or old, degraded mulch laid out on trail years ago. Variety of hardwoods in the area, including oak; also pine and cedar. Has been collected from May to September.
This is a 2006 collection featured at Indiana Mushrooms listed under the former name Rugosomyces ionides.
Tiny spores: 4-6 x 2.5-3 microns.
