Prevalent in Eastern North America
This fascinating mushroom was formerly called Rhodotus palmatus, but it has been determined through genetic studies to be a separate species. Rhodotus palmatus is found in Europe and our North American version is now named Rhodotus reticeps. The gelatinous and netted cap make this a unique mushroom and always fun to find. Once thought to be rare, it is actually somewhat common in the northern parts of eastern United States. More mushroom enthusiast in the woods has lead to more knowledge of what is out there. It is important to always document your finds (observations) on community sites like Mushroom Observer or iNaturalist. It truly adds to the scientific data that is helping to uncover fungal diversity.
