Gloeophyllum sepiarium has worldwide distribution.
Sometimes referred to as a “gilled polypore”, this fungus is in the order Gloeophyllales. Easily identified mushroom with its beautiful zoned colors of yellow, orange and rusty brown. Thin fruiting body can be leathery and velvety; later hard. Undersurface has brown to yellow-brown gills. Inner flesh is brown and corky. No stem. Stains black with a drop of KOH (potassium hydroxide). Grows in the summer and fall from conifer and hardwood. Gloeophyllum sepiarium is often found growing from outdoor wooden structures like picnic tables, decks and old lumber.
