Cortinarius Mushrooms

Cortinarius is a large genus of mushrooms in the family Cortinariaceae, containing over 2,000 species. They are found all over the world, in a variety of habitats.

General Description

  • Spore print: Rusty brown to brownish red
  • Partial veil (cortina): A thin layer of tissue that connects the cap margin to the stem in young specimens. The cortina usually disappears as the mushroom matures, but it may leave behind remnants on the stem or cap margin.
  • Gills: Closely spaced and attached to the stem. The gills may be initially covered by the cortina, but they become exposed as the mushroom grows.
  • Cap: Convex to flat, with a variety of colors and textures. Some Cortinarius mushrooms are brightly colored, while others are more drab.
  • Stem: Usually fibrous and may be tapered or bulbous towards the base. The stem may also have remnants of the cortina on it.
