Macrotyphula juncea is prevalent in the Midwest, Northeast and West Coast.
This collection of Macrotyphula juncea was found in October. Gregarious. Hundreds growing in mixed woods along two sides of a trail. Up to 10cm tall and only 2-3mm wide. Stem base has white, thread-like rhizomorphs. Grows from leaf litter and woody debris on the forest floor. There are several former names/synonyms including Clavaria juncea, Clavariadelphus junceus, and Typhula juncea. Taxonomy of this fungus is still a little fuzzy; see link to MushroomExpert.Com below.
