Cortinarius subscotoides is found in Eastern North America and Europe.
An uncommon/under-reported species. Cap is brown, (this collection’s width is 4.5cm) conical becoming convex; hygrophanous, darker at center. Note lightly colored cap margin. Flesh thin; brown. Stem is brown with white undertones, or vise versa; fibrous; slightly swollen base. Gills are attached; brown in color; widely spaced. No odor. Typical Cortinarius spore print of rusty brown. Single collections can be found as well as in small groups; growing from clay/limestone soil under oak (as also reported from MycoQuebec); August.
