Dissingia leucomelaena

Dissingia leucomelaena is found in North America and Europe

Dissingia cf. leucomelaena. Helvella leucomelaena is a former name/synonym. All images here are from one population found in different years growing under Eastern white pine planted in a city park. Early spring. Note variability of inner-surface and outer-surface colors. Shape/form also varies within the different collections. Probably part of a species complex as it is doubtful Midwestern, West Coast and European collections are all the same species.

Dissingia leucomelaena habitat

Collection site. All specimens growing from soil beneath thick layer of pine needles which make them difficult to see. You have to be looking for mushrooms to spot them.

An interesting, although not uncommon, collection of Dissingia leucomelaena with a completely white outer-surface (excipular surface). Very dry conditions. Microscopy did not detect any Hypomyces infection.

A gnarly, amorphous specimen.
