Helvella costifera

Helvella costifera occurs in North America and Europe. Also known from China.

Helvella costifera is a species of sac fungi belonging to the family Helvellaceae (Order Pezizales). Uncommon. Sparsely reported in North America and Europe. Characterized by its distinctive gray and cup-shaped cap. Prominent ribs on its undersurface. The ribs extend up from the stem, reaching almost to the margin of the cap. Ribbed stem can occasionally develop pockets.

Found growing beneath Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), with Pin Cherry (Prunus pennsylvanica) and Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum) growing nearby. Found in a city park in a landscaped area. Although growing in a mulch bed, these specimens of Helvella costifera grew from the soil beneath the mulch layer.
