Beautiful shot of Pluteus rimosellus by Brian C. Hunt. The undefined striations on the cap are a striking feature, probably observable for only a couple hours of this mushrooms 2-3 day life span. Yellow stem on this specimen, which is not always the case; can be white, also. Variations in color can be from a variety of factors like maturity, substrate and/or weather conditions.

Here’s an example collected and photographed by John Plischke in Indiana. This collection seems a little older than the one above. This cap surface could be described as pruinose, appearing to have a fine powdery coating. Much like Amanita farinosa.
