Russula anthracina is present in Eastern North America and Europe
An older specimen found in August. Hard consistency. Black staining on all parts. White gills are closely spaced. Cap and stem can be white or brown with white undertones. Taste is mealy; no distinct odor. White spore print. This uncommon (under-reported/identified) Russula mushroom seems to have a symbiotic relationship with pine trees. This collection of Russula anthracina was identified by DNA sequencing.
Here’s a beautiful young specimen from New Jersey USA, brown coloration; including micro and description at iNaturalist. (Matches the DNA of the collection featured here.)
