Russula mutabilis occurs in Eastern North America.

This mature collection of Russula mutabilis was found in August under oak. Unpleasant odor; some collections have an odor described as that of maraschino cherries or almonds. Cap exhibits orange coloration when young with a powdery coating, more brownish orange as it matures. The attached gills are white, changing/bruising a reddish brown; closely spaced or somewhat distant. Stem is equal; white with yellow/orange colors near the base, bruises red. White flesh has a typical Russula consistency and crumbles easily. Creamy white spore print. Red reaction on cap with KOH.
